Deadlines approaching for Affordable Care Act insurance

Nevadans who want government-subsidized health insurance coverage starting Feb. 1 must sign up through Nevada Health Link by Thursday.

Nevada Health Link is the state-created organization that helps residents find insurance plans that are based on income. It funnels consumers to Healthcare.gov, the federal system, to complete the enrollment process.

Thursday marks the second open-enrollment deadline for insurance plans offered via the Affordable Care Act, which requires most U.S. residents to have health coverage or face a tax penalty.

The final enrollment deadline is Feb. 15, with health coverage beginning March 1 for people who enroll by that date.

People who miss the deadline likely will have to wait until the next open-enrollment period to gain coverage in 2016.

Nevada consumers who signed up last year for federally subsidized plans must re-enroll.

More than 47,000 Nevadans had selected a plan or re-enrolled as of Jan. 9, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Nationally, about 6.8 million people have registered for a plan since open enrollment began Nov. 15.

About 90 percent of Nevadans who selected plans through Healthcare.gov in the first month of open enrollment received financial assistance to lower their premiums, officials said.

Visit nevadahealthlink.com or healthcare.gov/marketplace to begin the enrollment process. Nevada Health Link is offering in-person assistance from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Hills Community Center, 3521 N. Durango Drive in Las Vegas.

Las Vegans also can visit the Nevada Health Link Enrollment Store at the Boulevard Mall, 3528 S. Maryland Parkway, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily for help.

Officials suggest keeping the following items handy when enrolling:

• Nevada driver’s license or picture ID

• Permanent resident/alien registration card, if applicable

• Social Security cards for all tax household members

• Dates of birth for all tax household members

• Proof of Nevada residence, such a phone or power bill

• Best estimate of what your household income will be in 2015

• Copies of any current health insurance information

• Employer contact information if you have job-based coverage
