Former U.S. attorney gets prison time for income tax charges

A Las Vegas lawyer who once served as Nevada’s top federal prosecutor was sentenced today to more than a year in prison for neglecting to file income tax returns.

Lawrence J. Semenza II, 72, pleaded guilty in August to three misdemeanor counts of willfull failure to file a tax return.

U.S. District Court Judge James Mahan sentenced him today to serve a year and a half behind bars and spend another year under supervised release. He must also pay about $290,000 in restitution to the IRS.

Semenza, who served as Nevada’s U.S. attorney in the 1970s, must report to federal prison by April 17.

According to Semenza’s plea agreement, he had taxable income of about $655,000 from 2006 through 2010. His firm had taxable income of about $345,000.

Semenza didn’t file individual or corporate income tax returns during that time.
