Titanic effort needed to upset Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm

UFC News Conference At Smith Center

Steve Marcus

Ronda Rousey, UFC womens bantamweight champion, attends a UFC news conference at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts Monday, Nov. 17, 2014.

The UFC is coming off the most unpredictable card in promotional history.

Ten underdogs in 11 fights won at Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 61 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, including Frank Mir’s first-round TKO over Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. A repeat will be hard to come by in the second event of the week, UFC 184 Saturday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Six of the 11 bouts feature a favorite of at least minus-300 (risking $3 to win $1) including three of five on the pay-per-view, which airs at 7 p.m. following a preliminary card on Fox Sports 1 at 5.

The two biggest favorites are in the main and co-main events. Women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is listed at a 10-to-1 price over challenger Cat Zingano while Holly Holm, who’s expected to get the next title shot with a victory, is 9-to-1 against Raquel Pennington.

In the still-nascent state of the women’s 135-pound division, there’s yet to be an upset in a championship bout or title eliminator. The Las Vegas Sun’s picks panel don’t believe the surprises will start now as all five sided with Rousey and Holm.
