Bill would address equal pay for women in Nevada

CARSON CITY — Sen. Pat Spearman, D-North Las Vegas, is sponsoring a bill to strengthen the law regarding equal pay for women.

“This bill is about equal pay for equal work,” she said. “It speaks to the values that Nevadans hold dear.”

Under provisions of the bill, women would take complaints of discrimination to the state Equal Rights Commission, which would be empowered to award two years of back pay, costs and attorney fees, and impose damages in certain cases.

The bill also would prevent employers from firing an employee for talking about their wages with coworkers.

If the commission denies a complaint, women could still file a civil lawsuit.

The bill was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
