Bill would reform Nevada’s government pension system

CARSON CITY — A bill creating a new government pension system for future state and local government workers was introduced in the Assembly today.

Assemblyman Randall Kirner, R-Reno, said the new retirement system in some ways resembles a 401 (k) retirement plan.

Kirner has been trying for years to change the Public Employees Retirement System to a defined benefit and contribution system. He said it would mean less contributions by local governments.

Assembly Bill 190 was referred to the Assembly Government Affairs Committee.

Changing the Public Employees Retirement System has been one of the major controversies of this Legislature.

The system has about 100,000 contributing members and is paying benefits to about 55,000 retirees or their dependents.
