A pedestrian is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle near Valley High School this morning, Metro Police said.

Police received a report about 9:40 a.m. of an injury accident near South Eastern and East Karen avenues, Lt. Roger Price said. The pedestrian apparently was not in a crosswalk, Price said.

Evidence at the scene indicated that a 1994 Toyota pickup was traveling northbound on Eastern in the left lane when a male pedestrian crossed Eastern just after its intersection with East Karen, according to Metro.

The driver of the Toyota saw the pedestrian and tried to avoid hitting him by braking and swerving the the right. The pedestrian stopped and doubled back, placing him in the direction of the car once more. The front of the Toyota struck the pedestrian, causing him to hit its hood and windshield, according to Metro.

The pedestrian was then thrown forward off the car and came to rest in Eastern's middle lane.

He was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with critical injuries, police said.

The driver remained on scene and the collision is currently under investigation by Metro's Accident Investigation Section.
