Wind advisory accompanies warm temperatures in Las Vegas forecast

A wind advisory has been issued for the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the area surrounding Mountain Charleston as Southern Nevada prepares for near record-high temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory, which will last from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, warns residents of strong winds and dust in the air.

Meteorologists anticipate winds could reach 50 to 60 miles per hour in the Spring Mountains and 40 to 50 miles per hour in the Red Rock area, meteorologist Jim Harrison said.

The winds, which are coming into the area from the southwest, may reach 10 to 20 mph in the valley with speeds up to 35 mph near Summerlin, he said.

The winds arrive as the Weather Service predicts high temperatures for the valley in the mid-70s through at least Monday, nearing record levels.

The winds will help raise temperatures, Harrison said.

Lows are expected to stay in the low to mid-50s through the weekend, he said.

The normal high for this time of year is about 61 degrees, and the normal low is about 42, he said.
