Second measles case diagnosed in Clark County

A second person has been diagnosed with measles in Clark County.

Officials with the Southern Nevada Health District said the patient is an adult. No other details were available.

The first person in Clark County to contract the infection was a Valley High School student. That case prompted school officials to order 30 unvaccinated students to stay home for several weeks last month during the virus’ incubation period.

“We want to stress that it’s really important to get vaccinated,” Health District spokeswoman Jennifer Sizemore said.

In Northern Nevada, meanwhile, health officials say they’re investigating two possible measles cases.

Authorities said today that unvaccinated and at-risk people should stay away from Spanish Springs Elementary School near Reno to avoid possible exposure.

The Washoe County Health District said officials were working to confirm the diagnosis after two people showed measles-like symptoms

One attended the Sparks school and the other may have infected coworkers. The workplace wasn’t disclosed.

Authorities said people who might have been exposed should monitor themselves for 21 days for symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose and a blotchy rash.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can spread through coughing or sneezing.

People at highest risk are those who are unvaccinated, pregnant women, infants under 6 months old, and those with weakened immune systems.
