Letter to the editor:

Lauding Nevada for landing Tesla

Jobs build the tax base, they don’t deplete it. Your guest columnist, Richard Florida, actually makes the false claim that giving job creators tax holidays somehow lowers tax receipts. Mr. Florida’s most outrageous misrepresentation is that he seems to claim that the Tesla factory will cost taxpayers of Nevada $1.25 billion. That is not true — Nevadans pay nothing. That $1.25 billion in incentives are just tax credits and tax holidays for Tesla. They wouldn’t exist without Tesla. They are fictitious. What’s real are the sales taxes, payroll taxes and local taxes that will be paid by the 6,500 direct Tesla employees and the 16,000 or so ancillary jobs created by the project.

Tesla is committing capital to Nevada rather exploiting Nevadans. The Tesla win is huge for the state of Nevada. It is a clear indication of our competitiveness and a harbinger of success for the future. Our state leaders deserve high praise for their leadership and their success.
