letter to the editor:

No good options for U.S. on radicals

Radical Islam is spreading and becoming more powerful, not just in Iraq and Syria, but in many other places as well. Middle East countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, which are at risk from radical Islam, are not willing to fight it openly for fear of becoming targets of it.

America may or may not be attacked again, but to reduce our risk, one option would be to reintroduce American boots on the ground in large numbers.

A more palatable, but probably less effective, option is what President Barack Obama has proposed.

It is highly frustrating that if we involve ourselves, as we did in Iraq and Afghanistan, and then leave, a vacuum forms and it is filled by radical Islam. If we stay out, radical Islam is left to grow because nonradical governments and countries in the region will not fight radical Islam and want America to do their fighting for them.

It truly seems to be a situation where we have no good options.
