Bern’s-Eye View: Mountain West Best Bets Week 5

Fresno State’s Brandon Connette tosses a pass against Southern Utah in the first half of an NCAA college football game in Fresno, Calif., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014.

How Bad Will it Get for UNLV Football?

Las Vegas Sun sports writers Ray Brewer, Case Keefer and Taylor Bern get into some numbers behind UNLV's dreadful 1-3 start to the season and make predictions on what's still to come. Well, at least two of them do.

Tonight, the Mountain West’s defending champion will play on ESPN2, while Bishop Gorman High kicks off on ESPN, which says a lot about the perception of the league.

This is the first week of conference games for a lot of the league’s teams. A couple others — Wyoming and Colorado State — are trying to improve the Mountain West’s record against the Big 5 conferences.

Will they be able to win those road games against No. 9 Michigan State and Boston College? I wouldn’t bet on it. However, they might be able to cover the spread, and that’s all we really care about in this space:

FRIDAY

Fresno State (minus-4) at New Mexico

5 p.m., ESPN2

• There’s a rational argument to make for backing the Lobos, which doubles as the summation of this league’s woeful status right now.

Pick: Fresno State — Win

SATURDAY

Wyoming (plus-28 ½) at No. 9 Michigan State

9 a.m., ESPN2

• I like Wyoming, but the Spartans’ offense seems capable of going off at any moment, and I don’t think the Cowboys will get off to a good start like they did against Oregon.

Pick: Michigan State — Win

Colorado State (plus-9) at Boston College

9:30 a.m., Root Sports/ACC RSN

• This is my least confident pick of the week. I liked Colorado State a lot in the preseason and in this league, the Rams could still turn out to perform well, but I probably should side with the Big 5 team playing at home. Oh, well.

Pick: Colorado State — Win

Boise State (minus-13) at Air Force

4 p.m., CBS Sports Network

• If Boise State is going to prove itself as the league’s best team, this is a good spot to do so. I’m betting the Broncos pull it off, but it’s probably a little more likely that the Falcons give them trouble.

Pick: Boise State — Loss

UNR (minus-5) at San Jose State

7:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network

• Similar to Boise State, this is an opportunity for the Wolf Pack to go out and prove a little something. Shouldn’t be an issue.

Pick: UNR — Win

Last week: 3-5

Season: 21-15
