School locked down because of nearby police activity

Updated Friday, Sept. 19, 2014 | 5:40 p.m.

A school in North Las Vegas was locked down this afternoon as police responded to a barricade situation nearby, authorities said.

John Tartan Elementary School, 3030 E. Tropical Parkway, was placed on lockdown about 1:30 p.m., said Capt. Ken Young of the Clark County School District Police.

The lockdown was lifted a little after 3:30 p.m., Young said.

North Las Vegas Police Officer Aaron Patty said a person was involved in a barricade situation near East Centennial Parkway and North Palmer Street, less than a mile from the school.

The barricade, which began about 10 a.m., resulted from a domestic situation, Patty said. The person involved was taken into custody after surrendering peacefully, he said.
