Program to assist long-term jobless set to kick off in Las Vegas

A program to help the longtime unemployed in Las Vegas find jobs will be starting in October.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation said Thursday those who have been jobless for 27 weeks or more will be eligible for a five-week program to assess their skills, their career readiness and get help in finding work.

The agency said the program is limited but did not specify a number. Those who want to participate must apply online by Oct. 3.

When completed, those enrolled will get help in finding jobs and their salary will be paid on a trial basis for up to eight weeks at which time the employer decides whether to keep the worker on full time and pick up the full salary.

The Platform to Employment program, financed by the federal government, started in 2011 in Connecticut, where it placed 80 percent of those unemployed in jobs.

A similar venture will start in Northern Nevada in 2015.
