West Nile virus identified in 9 Nevada counties

West Nile virus has been found in mosquitoes in nine Nevada counties, state officials said today.

More than 3,300 groups of mosquitoes across the state have been tested since May, according to the Nevada Department of Agriculture. Ninety-three of those were identified as carrying the virus.

Clark County had the most at 68, while Washoe County had 11. Virus-carrying groups have also been identified in Carson City, Elko, Pershing, Humboldt, Lincoln, Mineral and Nye counties.

Officials say the best way to protect against contracting the disease is to remove standing water around homes that are breeding grounds for mosquitoes and use inset repellent.

Mosquito season is expected to end when the first frost arrives around October.
