letter to the editor:

Statue sullies Johnny Unitas

The indefinite suspension of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice by the NFL is appropriate punishment for Rice’s despicable and dastardly act of hitting his girlfriend and knocking her unconscious. The NFL in July suspended Rice for two games and recently upgraded the suspension to indefinite.

On the day the Ravens were contemplating how to handle the Rice situation, they were installing a statue of Ray Lewis outside M&T Bank Stadium.

How ironic that they chose to honor a suspected murderer. Lewis was a great player, but his life is tainted with his involvement in the deaths of Jacinth Baker and Richard Lollar. Where was the NFL’s and Ravens’ angst then?

Putting a statue of Lewis in some way diminishes the worth of the only statue that should be there: Johnny Unitas. It is also a slap in the faces of the families of Baker and Lollar.

What will we see next, a statue of O.J. Simpson at USC and outside the Buffalo Bills’ Ralph Wilson Stadium?
