Former Las Vegas doctor sentenced in drug case

A former doctor who sold prescription drugs to an undercover government agent was sentenced Tuesday to 44 months in prison, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorneys' Office.

Vinay Bararia, 44, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release after he admitted to selling 500 hydrocodone pills to a Drug Enforcement Agency agent in July 2011, according to the release.

Bararia pleaded guilty in December to one count of distribution of a controlled substance, the release said.

According to the release, Bararia admitted in his plea agreement to selling the pills for $1,125 in the parking lot of Centennial Hills Hospital, where he worked. He also reportedly distributed about 3,600 oxycodone pills from July 28, 2011, to Nov. 8, 2011, the release said.

U.S. District Judge Jennifer Dorsey denied a request by Bararia's attorneys for a reduced sentence, the release said.

Dorsey also ordered Bararia to forfeit about $50,000 in cash and the 2007 Jaguar he used to distribute drugs, according to the release. Officials recovered 2,038 oxycodone pills from Bararia's vehicle when he was arrested in March 2012, the release said.

According to the release, the former physician has been in federal custody since November 2012.

Bararia, who surrendered his license to practice medicine in Nevada in 2012, specialized in internal medicine.
