Highway Patrol IDs driver arrested in fatal wrong-way crash

A man accused of driving the wrong way on the 215 Beltway early Tuesday morning, killing a woman in a head-on collision, has been identified as Jorge Paz-Herrera, 30, of Las Vegas, authorities said.

According to a Nevada Highway Patrol report, Paz-Herrera was booked in absentia about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday on counts of driving under the influence, driving the wrong way and driving without a valid license.

He has not yet been formally charged.

Herrera was driving a red Toyota Tundra east in the westbound lanes of the 215 Beltway when he collided with a silver Hyundai Elantra about 12:45 a.m., according to the patrol. The driver of the Hyundai, Jennie Marie Bergstrom, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the arrest report, Herrera had a flushed faced, bloodshot eyes and his breath smelled of an “unknown intoxicating beverage” when interview by a Highway Patrol officer after the accident.

Herrera denied having anything to drink that night and seemed confused, according to the report.

He said he believed he was driving south on the 215 Beltway and was looking for the Warm Springs Road exit when the accident occurred, the report said.
