Senate off to a slow, lurching start in considering Tesla tax breaks

CARSON CITY — The Senate was off at a snail’s pace Wednesday for a special session of the Legislature to consider tax breaks for a Tesla auto battery plant.

Gov. Brian Sandoval issued a proclamation for the session to start at noon.

The Senate convened at 1:45 p.m and took care of about 20 minutes of ceremonial business before recessing until 4 p.m.

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, president of the Senate, said there were technical difficulties necessitating the recess.

Senate Majority Leader Mo Denis, D-Las Vegas, said the bills proposed by the governor were not ready to be introduced.

In the meantime, senators adopted a resolution that lawmakers will not be reimbursed for newspapers, stamps, stationary or phone calls during the special session.

Senators also adopted a resolution that all bills passed will be immediately transmitted to the Assembly instead of waiting until the end of the day.

Denis said this would speed up the session.
