Underreacting

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer try to atone for an obnoxious case of overreaction after the first week of games by dialing back their opinions. They also debate Liberty vs. Coronado, and come out on opposite sides regarding how the game will play out.

John Molchon’s first college football recruiting visit sure left a good impression.

Molchon, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound offensive tackle from Faith Lutheran, visited Boise State last weekend for its home opener against Colorado State. Tuesday night, he committed to the Mountain West school.

John Molchon is considered a two-star prospect by Rivals.com in its five-star evaluation scale, selecting Boise State over scholarship offers from other schools in the league such as hometown UNLV, UNR and Colorado State. He also had offers from Kent State, Fordham and Montana State.

Molchon didn’t join Faith Lutheran’s football program until the eighth grade — the Summerlin-area school has a middle school team. He didn’t become a full-time lineman until being urged by coaches to embrace the position last fall, also playing fullback and tight end. He also plays high-level basketball and used football as a means to stay in shape.

That quickly changed last fall.

He was the Division I-A lineman of the year in helping Faith Lutheran win the school’s first state championship in more than two decades of existence. When college recruiters started aggressively pursuing him last spring, he made sure they knew he wanted to play for a university with solid academics. That’s why he considered Fordham until the end.

Here’s more of his rise from basketball player to Division I football prospect.
