State approves settlement to Railroad Pass in eminent domain deal

CARSON CITY – The state Board of Examiners Tuesday approved a $2.7 million payment to the Railroad Pass Casino for the property being taken to build the Boulder City Bypass.

This brings the total settlement to $4.7 million for the land owned by the casino.

Laura Fitzsimmons, special counsel to the state department of transportation, said the club, owned by MGM, sought more than $8.6 million.

The freeway will also be modified at a cost of $800,000 with the state picking up $422,000 of the total. It will provide better access to the resort, called by Fitzsimmons one of the oldest, if not the oldest, in Southern Nevada.

Transportation Director Rudy Malfabon told the examiners board the modifications will also make access easier for private residents. He said part the settlement will be eligible for federal funds.

Malfabon said the project would be put out to bid in late fall.

Fitzsimmons said there were some small parcels still to be acquired but the state was well below the $30 million set aside for land acquisition on the job.
