Most schools in hard-hit Moapa area to reopen Wednesday

Seven out of eight Clark County schools closed today as a result of the weather will be open Wednesday.

The Clark County School District announced that Perkins Elementary School in the town of Moapa will remain closed Wednesday.

Eight schools across the county were closed today as a result of flooding, power outages and road conditions. Those schools included Perkins Elementary, W. Mack Lyon Middle School, Grant Bowler Elementary School, Moapa Valley High School, Joseph L. Bowler Elementary School, Virgin Valley Elementary School, Charles A. Hughes Middle School and Virgin Valley High School.

Heavy flooding stranded some students at school Monday while turning other buildings into refuges for motorists.

About 70 students who were stranded at Perkins were released to their caretakers by 10 p.m. Monday.

Students from Lyon Middle School in Overton who could not be picked up due to the harsh weather stayed overnight at the Clark County fairgrounds in Logandale. Those 17 students were transferred this morning to Perkins to be released to their guardians.

Meanwhile, Hughes Middle School in Mesquite was used as an emergency shelter Monday for those affected by flooding and motorists impacted by closures on the I-15.
