We should go much further than splitting California into six states.
In the interest of accountability and transparency, we should split all the states according to the square root of the total U.S. population, making each state no larger than Rhode Island.
This would make all senators and representatives accountable to much smaller groups of people and a vote on a bill a much more reliable cross-section of the nation.
This would lift the U.S. closer to the ideal of equality.
