letter to the editor:

A disconnect in education spending

In the Wednesday letter “Tax dollars and education,” the writer parrots the liberal canard that taxing and spending is the answer to all problems. He says we need to spend more to educate our children.

A couple of facts betray this idea. New York City spends more than $19,552 per student, the highest in the nation, and 80 percent of its high school graduates must take remedial reading and math classes to get into community college.

On the other end of the spectrum, Utah spends the least, $6,206, or $2,000 less than Nevada’s $8,222.

Ninety-one percent of Utah residents have a high school diploma, and 30.7 percent have completed at least a bachelor’s degree, both among the best rates nationwide.
