Sleeping couple narrowly escape early morning fire

A couple narrowly escaped after a garage fire early today filled a house with choking black smoke as they slept, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

Firefighters responded at 1:38 a.m. to the fire in the 8900 block of Rocky Shore Drive in the Lakes area, near Fort Apache Road and Desert Inn Road. They found the garage engulfed in intense flames, officials said.

The couple were sleeping when they were awakened by thick, black smoke pouring into an upstairs bedroom and ran out of the house, officials said. A man suffered minor smoke inhalation, but there were no injuries, officials said.

It took firefighters less than 10 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

The fire heavily damaged the garage and destroyed four vehicles inside, officials said. Other areas of the house sustained heat and smoke damage. Damage was estimated at $75,000, officials said.

The fire, which was ruled accidental, started near an all-terrain vehicle in the garage, but the cause could not be pinpointed, officials said.
