We should opt out of Common Core

I agree with Brian Greenspun’s Sunday column in which he makes the case that there is an immediate need for improvement in our schools, but a margin tax on business is not the way we should go. Teacher salaries need to rise substantially — just not by worsening the business climate.

I would add another change that we need in Nevada. We need to opt out of Common Core. Indiana did it, using the reasoning that Hoosiers, not Washington bureaucrats, should determine what’s taught in Indiana schools. We need that same spirit in Nevada. Common Core has a host of critics readily available by Googling “Common Core criticism.” We should all take the time to consider those criticisms and come to our own conclusions.
