Moapa Valley’s RJ Hubert returned the opening kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown today in the Pirates’ 41-15 victory against visiting Spring Valley in the Division I-A Southern Region quarterfinals.

Hubert scored three different ways, catching four passes for 71 yards and two touchdown and returning an interception for another score.

Last week against Chaparral, Hubert had three interceptions and a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Kaleb Bodily finished with four receptions for 118 yards a touchdown, helping Moapa Valley advance to next week’s semifinals against Sierra Vista. The winner next week earns a spot in the state semifinals.

“When you score in all three facets of the game, you can’t complain about that,” Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis said.

Zach Hymas returned as quarterback for Moapa Valley after missing the past two games with a leg injury. He was called into action early and often, passing for three touchdowns and nearly 200 yards.

“It was good for Zach to come in there and get some time,” Lewis said.
