Driver arrested after 2-state, high-speed chase

A 50-year-old man led police on a high-speed car chase from California to Las Vegas early this morning before he bailed out and was arrested, authorities said.

The Nevada Highway Patrol received a call about 3:10 a.m. from the California Highway Patrol that a man was leading officers on a high-speed chase on Interstate 15 North near the California-Nevada border, NHP Trooper Loy Hixson said.

California officers had attempted to pull the car over on a traffic violation near Bakersfield when it took off, CHP spokesman Steve Carapia said. The car was going about 90 to 100 mph as it approached Nevada, he said.

Nevada troopers tried using spike strips twice to stop the car as it entered the state, but the man, later identified as Charles Hodges, avoided the devices by driving onto the shoulder, Hixson said.

Hodges eventually drove onto St. Rose Parkway and abandoned his car near East Starr Avenue and Gilespie Street in the southern Las Vegas Valley, Hixson said.

Hodges fled on foot, but police surrounded the area, and Metro Police took him into custody about 4 a.m., Hixson said.

He was arrested on counts including disobeying a peace officer, reckless driving, driving the wrong way on a one-way road and failure to yield to emergency vehicles.
