U.S. Sen. Harry Reid’s daughter is seriously ill, and the Senate majority leader returned to Washington, D.C., from Nevada over the weekend to be with her as she prepared to undergo surgery.

Reid's daughter, Lana Reid Barringer, “unexpectedly became ill with a serious medical condition that requires surgery,” according to a statement from Reid’s office. She is receiving treatment in Washington, D.C., where she lives.

Reid’s team provided no other information about her condition. In the statement, Reid’s family asked for privacy.

Reid, a Nevada Democrat, was expected to attend events for the 150th anniversary of the state and is preparing for midterm elections Tuesday that could determine control of the Senate.
