Theater fire sparks drama at downtown arts school

Updated Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014 | 4:55 p.m.

A small fire at Las Vegas Academy of the Arts this morning caused about $5,000 damage and prompted a brief evacuation, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

A stage curtain in the theater caught fire about 11:25 a.m. at the downtown school at 315 S. 7th St., fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Some students were evacuated for less than 30 minutes, Szymanski said.

The fire and smoke were limited to the theater, he said. No injuries were reported.

It appears the curtain rubbed against a built-in floor light, causing the curtain to smolder, Szymanski said.

The fire was put out with an extinguisher before crews arrived, and firefighters used large fans to clear smoke from the theater, Szymanski said.

Las Vegas Academy of the Arts is a Clark County School District magnet high school.
