Welcome to Las Vegas sign to shed light on domestic violence awareness

One of the most well-known Las Vegas landmarks will go purple Monday to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign will recognize UNLV’s Take Back the Night event and efforts to end domestic violence.

Take Back the Night, an event honoring victims of domestic violence, is scheduled for Thursday.

Clark County commissioners will turn on the purple light bulbs at the sign during a brief ceremony about 11 a.m.

The sign, located on Las Vegas Boulevard south of Russell Road, typically uses yellow bulbs.

The lights have been changed out on special occasions, with blue bulbs marking World Autism Awareness Day and an assortment of colored bulbs creating a rainbow effect in celebration of gay pride.
