An inmate at Ely State Prison died Thursday in an apparent suicide.

John Christopher Carroll, 35, was pronounced dead by emergency responders after being found unresponsive in his single cell, according to a news release from the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Medical staff had attempted to revive him, according to the release.

Carroll was sentenced in February 2010 to five to 20 years in prison for attempted sexual assault in Clark County. He was serving a consecutive sentence of five years to life, with the chance of parole, for first-degree kidnapping.

An autopsy will be conducted by the White Pine County Sheriff’s Office.
