letter to the editor:

Wrong city for Biden’s message

It was noble of Vice President Joe Biden to come to Las Vegas on Oct. 6. He was on a mission to encourage raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. This would be much higher pay than the current minimum wage and would help many workers.

One must question why Biden would promote this issue in Las Vegas. For years, the casino and culinary industry have been the champions of paying many jobs minimum wage. The workers are expected to earn tips to compensate for the low pay to make a decent living.

However, many visitors do not tip well anymore, and some cultures do not even understand tipping for good service. Casino owners Steve Wynn and Sheldon Adelson and others are elated to keep getting richer by paying such low wages.

Kudos to Biden to promote the betterment of American workers by encouraging higher pay. But he probably could have picked a much better city for promoting the minimum wage issue. The casino industry probably felt like telling Biden: “See ya. Have a nice day.”
