Nevada is getting more than $19 million in federal funds to improve water infrastructure and reduce water pollution.
The grant announced Thursday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to go toward several projects, including replacing aging sewer lines in Nye County and upgrading the drinking water system to lower arsenic levels for the town of McDermitt, near the Oregon border.
The money goes through Nevada's Clean Water and Drinking Water revolving funds, which provide low-cost loans for clean water and sewer projects around the state. The EPA has awarded $186 million to those funds since the programs began in 1988.
The funds have financed projects including upgrades to sewer pipes in tiny Gerlach, which can get overwhelmed by the crowds that attend the annual Burning Man festival.
