Police cleared in fatal shooting of suicidal man

Metro officers were justified in killing a man they say was pointing a gun at them during a confrontation last year, the Clark County District Attorney’s Office announced today.

Patrick Heki, 26, was suicidal and armed with several guns early Dec. 7 when three officers arrived at his apartment in the 3900 block of Mountain Vista Street, according to a report released by the district attorney.

The officers heard gunshots as they neared the apartment, and when they saw Heki, they ordered him to drop his weapons, the report said.

Instead, Heki left the apartment and pointed a handgun at an officer, the report said. The officers fired on Heki, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital, the report said.

“The police officers were confronted with a dangerous situation and a real threat of deadly force,” District Attorney Steve Wolfson said in a statement. “It appears the decedent was long-troubled. It is tragic that his life ended as it did.”

The report found Heki had attempted suicide the year before and told his parents the night of his death that he wanted to kill other people. Heki was wearing a camouflage jacket and had two rifles slung over his shoulder, the report said.

The three officers who fired on Heki were Paul Kunz, Justin Marzec and Joshua Giese. Kunz and Marzec were five-year veterans of the department. Giese had been with Metro since 2006.
