Health District getting $2.6 million to fight chronic disease

The Southern Nevada Health District will receive a $2.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to fight chronic disease.

More than half of the money will go to the Partnership to Improve Community Health, which aims to prevent chronic disease, address tobacco use and fight poor nutrition.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the Health District and our partners to increase our community’s access to smoke-free and tobacco-free environments, healthier food and beverage options, and physical activity opportunities in order to reduce the toll of chronic disease in Clark County,” district Community Health Director Dr. Cassius Lockett said in a statement.

U.S. Sen. Harry Reid’s office also announced a $530,000 grant for Healthy Start, a program that works to prevent infant mortality and addresses the needs of mothers.
