Letter to the editor:

Through the looking glass

Election Day made it clear America has descended into Wonderland. The red Queen of Hearts is now in control of our fate.

For six years, Republicans in Congress fought against President Barack Obama, who hoped to change things for the better. Their purpose was to degrade and destroy any progress by Democrats. They shut down the government, tried to repeal health care about 35 times, reduced our credit rating, massacred food stamp programs and cut unemployment benefits.

Their sleight of hand proved wildly successful. Americans have been duped into believing the party of obstruction will now become the party of salvation.

John Boehner recently announced the Republican agenda once the House of Representatives and Senate are under their control: Repeal Obamacare, cut the deficit (translation: more cuts in benefits for the 99 percent) and change the tax code (translation: more wealth for the 1 percent).

I look into the glass of American prosperity and see barely a drop of hope left for progress in the next two years. But the voters placed their trust in a group who have mastered the art of pretense. When Republicans campaigned, they pretended they were not the group responsible for a Congress that has done less than any other — Obama was responsible for the gridlock in Washington.

Like the naive and hopeful Alice in Lewis Carroll’s famous the novel, American voters fell for the Republican ploy. So now that America has fallen down the rabbit hole, let the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party begin.
