The Rebel Room

UNLV's Got (Don't Say) Talent

On this episode of UNLV's Got Talent, Rebels beat writer Taylor Bern tells colleagues Ray Brewer and Case Keefer why they need to stop using that word as the go-to for UNLV's basketball program.

The Mountain West’s best team, Colorado State, is off this week, but there are two games on this week’s slate with big implications for division races.

The first takes place in Colorado Springs, Colo., where UNR crosses over the division line to play a key game for both teams. Then there’s the nightcap in Idaho, where Boise State is a two-touchdown favorite against San Diego State.

I look at those two games, plus the rest of the league slate, as we head into the final weeks of the regular season with this column’s picks hitting 59.7 percent for the year:

Note: UNLV picks will appear in the live blog on the day of games.

SATURDAY

UNR (plus-2.5) at Air Force

11 a.m., Root Sports/Mountain West Network

• This is the tough one this week. Both teams have something to play for — the Wolf Pack sit atop the West standings, while the Falcons are a game back in the Mountain but still play Colorado State and have a victory against Boise State. If UNR can keep pace for a while, I like the Wolf Pack to win the game down the stretch.

Pick: UNR — Loss

New Mexico (plus-19.5) at Utah State

1 p.m., ESPNews

• Last week against Boise State I hesitantly took the Lobos at plus-19 and New Mexico was leading at halftime. I’m not expecting a repeat of that, but 19.5 is too much for the Aggies to cover here.

Pick: New Mexico — Win

Hawaii (plus-9.5) at San Jose State

1:30 p.m., Mountain West Network

• Two bad teams playing out the string. I like Hawaii to provide a better performance than UNLV did at Spartan Stadium and if they do, the Rainbow Warriors would score a point in the competition to not be considered the league’s worst team. UNLV and Hawaii meet on the Big Island next week.

Pick: Hawaii — Win

San Diego State (plus-14) at Boise State

7:15 p.m., ESPNU

• This line smells. The team that got all it could handle from 3-6 New Mexico is going to cover two touchdowns against a decent Aztecs squad? It feels like they’re begging me to take SDSU, and against my better judgment, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Pick: San Diego State — Win

Last week: 3-2

Season: 43-29
