Police: 1 killed in possible street racing accident

Updated Monday, Nov. 10, 2014 | 3:13 p.m.

A 19-year-old man was killed early this morning in what may have been a street racing accident in the southwest valley, Metro Police said.

Police received a report about 2:30 a.m. of a two-car crash on Spanish Ridge Avenue, just west of Durango Drive, Officer Laura Meltzer said.

The teen, identified by the Clark County Coroner's Office as Micheal Anthony Aviles, was driving east on Spanish Ridge in a 1998 Pontiac Firebird alongside a 1988 Honda CRX when the Pontiac drifted left and hit a block wall, police said.

The impact sent the Pontiac back into the road, where it collided with the Honda, police said.

The driver of the Pontiac, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other car left the scene and has not yet been located, police said.

Police suspect the cars may have been racing, but the investigation is ongoing, Meltzer said.

The crash resulted in the 69th traffic-related fatality this year in Metro’s jurisdiction.
