House Fire

A man was hospitalized in serious condition with smoke inhalation this morning after a house fire in the northwest valley, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

Firefighters received reports about 10:15 a.m. of a fire at a home at 3217 Miramar Drive, near West Cheyenne Avenue and North Rancho Drive, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Callers indicated that a bedridden woman may have been trapped inside the house, Szymanski said. But when firefighters arrived, everyone, including the woman, was out of the house, he said.

The fire was confined to a bedroom and only caused about $1,000 damage, but it filled the house with smoke, Szymanski said. A resident had put out most of the fire with a garden hose, he said.

One man was taken to University Medical Center in serious condition with smoke inhalation, Szymanski said. Another resident and a neighbor who came to the aid of the residents were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, he said.

The house did not have smoke detectors, Szymanski said.

The American Red Cross was assisting six adults and two teens with temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
