letter to the editor:

Treating pets better than humans

Human beings are indeed “strange,” in that we treat our pets better than we do our parents or siblings.

When “Fido” is suffering, we take extreme pity on him and “put him down,” but when Mom is in agony at age 88 and begging her children for a “merciful end to my suffering,” we ignore her pleas, explaining that we’d go to jail for displaying such compassion.

That was my own situation. I could do nothing more than watch my mother slowly die before my eyes, while her doctor pumped enough medication into her veins to keep 20 drug addicts on Cloud Nine for several months.

In the end, she no longer recognized me, nor did she respond to the sound of her own name.

“Fido” was luckier and had a much better demise.
