Reports of a man walking along Interstate 15 with a gun early Saturday near the Las Vegas Strip resulted in a fatal shooting and prompted authorities to close the highway for more than six hours.

The Nevada Highway Patrol reported that troopers shot and killed the man, who was spotted about 3:30 a.m. carrying a "high-power" rifle northbound towards Charleston Boulevard.

Officials shut down the southbound lanes at Sahara and the northbound lanes at Flamingo after responding to the calls. Traffic remained shut off until shortly before 10 a.m., when southbound lanes were reopened. The northbound lanes were partially reopened about 40 minutes later.

NHP Trooper Loy Hixson said the man died on the scene. No specific time was given for his death, and the incident is still under investigation.

"We don't know why he was on the interstate, number one as a pedestrian, and number two as a pedestrian carrying a rifle," Hixson said.

The man's identity will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office.
