letter to the editor:

Porn is at the root of most sex crimes

Arresting pimps and rescuing victims of sex trafficking during big sporting events is a very good thing. And of course, we realize that the officers out there are doing all they can.

But, I feel as though there needs to be more focus on destroying the root of the problem to prevent the trafficking of children and young women in the first place.

Pornography it seems, is the fuel that sex trafficking thrives on, and yet, there is little being done about it or other sexually oriented businesses. They remain thriving businesses that nearly anyone can access; one can simply walk down to the local strip club or use the Internet and a credit card to fulfill one’s erotic desires.

But when these businesses seem to not light the fire to one’s groin anymore, one’s erotic fantasies turn to other means for sexual satisfaction. And that just might be committing sexual acts with a child.

On numerous occasions, we arrest people for committing sexual acts toward children only later to find that their sexual obsession started with one porn-littered magazine.

Have we ever arrested a sexual offender who hasn’t looked at porn or hasn’t been involved with a sexually oriented business? Of course we have, but I think we will find that most sexual offenders and patrons to sex trafficking begin with pornography.
