Man in standoff was sought on kidnapping, home invasion charges

Updated Thursday, March 20, 2014 | 5:33 p.m.

A wanted man who barricaded himself inside a house for more than six hours today has been arrested by SWAT officers.

Emanuel Cortez, 25, was wanted on kidnapping and home invasion charges stemming from an incident Wednesday, Metro Police Officer Jesse Roybal said. Patrol officers found him this morning at a house in the 2700 block of Del Mar Avenue and tried to coax him outside until about 1 p.m., when they summoned a SWAT team and negotiators.

Cortez was arrested about 2:30 p.m. on the outstanding charges. Officials could not provide details about Wednesday’s incident.

Mary Hansen, who lives on Balboa Avenue, a block away from the standoff, said she could hear officers ordering someone to put down a gun and come out of the house. She also heard five loud explosions, though officials did not say shots were fired during the standoff.

The house that the man barricaded himself inside is near Lake Elementary School and Valley High School. Neither school was placed on lockdown, Clark County School District spokeswoman Melinda Malone said.

The school day at the elementary school normally ends at 2:26 p.m., and the high school lets out at 2:11 p.m.
