Joe Downtown: Streets to close for burning of Life Cube

Life Cube, a Burning Man art piece, is burned at the 2013 festival.

The streets will be closed downtown Friday night in the vicinity of the Life Cube, which will be set ablaze, along with thousands of written goals and wishes.

The Life Cube is the manifestation of Scott Cohen’s dream to take his Burning Man sculpture into an urban setting. It’s a 24-by-24-foot plywood cube, painted and filled with notes from thousands of people.

As he did at the Burning Man festival last year in Northern Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, Cohen will set the cube on fire at 8 p.m.

Barriers will keep people at least 100 feet from the blaze.

Detour signs will direct motorists around the street closures, which begin at 4 p.m. Friday. They closures are:

• Fremont Street and Ogden Avenue from 8th to 11th streets.

• Ninth and 10th streets from Stewart to Carson avenues.

Joe Schoenmann doesn’t just cover downtown; he lives and works there. Schoenmann is Greenspun Media Group’s embedded downtown journalist, working from an office in the Emergency Arts building.
