Las Vegas to again get homeland security funding

The Las Vegas area is back on a national homeland security funding list, and should receive $1 million of more than $400 million the federal government is distributing this year to communities to prepare for and respond to disasters.

Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid on Tuesday called the grant crucial for southern Nevada, which missed the cut for Urban Area Security Initiative funding last year.

Reid says in a statement that language in this year's federal spending bill gave Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson flexibility to restore funding for an area home to about 2 million people and host to about 40 million tourists a year.

Las Vegas-area elected officials decried the loss of federal funding last year.

The region got more than $9 million in 2007.
