Metro Police have arrested a teen in connection with a fatal shooting downtown earlier this month.

Alan Sosa, 18, is charged with murder, attempted murder and carrying a concealed weapon, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday.

Sosa, who is being held in the Clark County Detention Center without bail, is accused in the shooting death of Juan Cervantes on March 1 at the corner of 21st Street and Elm Avenue.

An arrest report indicates Sosa confronted the victim outside a convenience store on Stewart Avenue, where Cervantes had stopped with his wife to buy cigarettes. A Hispanic male asked Cervantes for a lighter and then pulled a gun on him, according to the report.

Cervantes and his wife drove away, heading north on 21st Street, but the same group Cervantes encountered outside the store yelled at them to pull over, according to the arrest report.

Cervantes’ wife slowed their car and hopped out, at which point a male, later identified as Sosa, shot at her but missed, the report states. Cervantes ran toward his wife and was shot three times, police said.

Cervantes later died at University Medical Center. The shooter fled the scene before police arrived.

Information provided by Cervantes’ wife and anonymous citizens led homicide detectives to Sosa as the suspect, according to the arrest report.

Cell phone records obtained by police indicate Sosa was near 21st Street and Elm Avenue at the time of the shooting.

Sosa is scheduled to make his first appearance in Las Vegas Township Justice Court on Wednesday morning.
