Deadline to get insurance through Nevada exchange may be extended

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval said he is leaning toward supporting an extension of the deadline to sign up for health insurance through the state exchange, which has been plagued with technical problems.

But Sandoval said today he wants to hear from stakeholders and those who have been unable to enroll through the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange before making a final decision.

The deadline to sign up for insurance without penalty is March 31, but regulations permit granting an extension of 30 to 60 days.

The Silver State Health Insurance Exchange board will consider granting an extension at its meeting on Thursday.

So far, 20,000 people have been able to get coverage through the exchange. The original goal of 118,000 has been reduced to 50,000.
