1 dead in North Las Vegas officer-involved shooting

Updated Monday, March 10, 2014 | 1:53 p.m.

A 38-year-old man is dead after an officer-involved shooting overnight in a North Las Vegas neighborhood.

The incident happened about 1 a.m. Monday in the 800 block of East Tonopah Avenue, near Woodard Street

Preliminary investigation indicates that a patrol officer attempted to stop a man on the sidewalk, but the man refused to cooperate, police department spokeswoman Officer Chrissie Coon said.

The officer called for backup and was walking toward the man, who was armed with a knife, when the situation escalated, Coon said. The officer shot the man multiple times, killing him, she said.

The officer was a five-year veteran of the North Las Vegas Police Department.

The names of the officer and the person who was shot have not yet been released.

Las Vegas Sun reporter Brian Nordli and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
