Woman pinned against rock dies at Valley of Fire

Updated Thursday, March 6, 2014 | 4:02 p.m.

An elderly woman died today when she was pinned between a rock and an SUV at Valley of Fire State Park.

Metro Police said the woman, 72, had just parked and stepped out of her 2007 Ford Expedition at the Lone Rock parking area in a dirt lot when it started to slide forward. The woman apparently ran back to the SUV toward the driver’s side door to try to step inside, but the vehicle hit a large rock formation and pinned her up against it.

When paramedics arrived at the location about 11:30 a.m., she was already dead.

CORRECTION: Based on preliminary information released by police, an earlier version of this story misidentified the gender of the victim. | (March 6, 2014)
