3 injured in crash; man arrested on DUI count

Updated Wednesday, March 5, 2014 | 10:08 a.m.

CORRECTION: Due to a reporter's error, a previous version of this story contained incorrect information about the identity of the person arrested on a count of DUI.

Two people were in critical condition and a third was seriously injured today after a woman crashed into their vehicle, Metro Police said.

Police responded about 2:50 a.m. to the collision between a Toyota sedan and a BMW sedan on the Harmon Avenue overpass near Frank Sinatra Drive.

The driver of the BMW, Jacob Chavez, 35, of Las Vegas, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a count of felony DUI, police said.

Evidence indicated the Toyota was headed west on Harmon in the center lane next to a BMW in the left lane, police said.

The driver of the Toyota attempted to merge left, failing to see the BMW and crashing into the right side of the car, police said. The collision sent the BMW over the median and into a concrete barrier, police said.

Chavez was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries and two passengers in his car, a man and a woman, were taken to the hospital with critical injuries, police said.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured in the crash.
